Then the first big surprise of the evening: One of the brightest stars on the country music horizon is a young group called Nickel Creek. Chris Thile, Sean and Sara Watkins, and bassist David Spiker came on to thunderous applause from a pleasantly surprised audience and took the evening up to a new level. Singing around one microphone, their playing and harmonizing were beautiful. Their songs were surprising in their diversity, especially the Beatles “Taxman” done the way it was meant to be, Bluegrass style. We brought them back for an encore and they graciously consented to perform “When You Come Back Down”, a song written by yours truly and Tim O’Brien. At that point we all needed an intermission.

After the intermission the evening took on new dimensions. I doubt by now that there are few of you who haven’t heard the wonderful music of John Mayer. His “Room For Squares” CD is not only a hit, but an incredibly evocative collection of songs that has propelled him into the ranks of major stardom in a very short time. I admittedly didn’t know who he was six months ago and was channel surfing when I caught him in concert. When I saw that his audience was young women of college age who were singing along to all of his lyrics and had tears rolling down their cheeks I knew I was witnessing someone who was special and unique.
