Your Cup of Coffee Can Make a World of Difference

Many birds are losing valuable habitat because of the clearing of the tropical forest to grow coffee on plantations in the full sun. Coffee grows traditionally under the shade canopy of large forested woodlands. These woodlands are the home to millions of migritory birds and other wildlife.

The U.S. consumes more than 1,500 million pounds of coffee a year. By choosing to buy and drink coffee that is sustainably shade-grown and fair-traded, we support continued coffee farming under the forest canopy that provides necessary habitat for songbirds. Fair trade certification means the farmers are receiving a living wage for their crop.

We, as coffee drinkers, have a tremendous opportunity and responsibility. By making sustainable choices with our coffee purchases, we can help protect precious habitat for all of the lives that depend on it. When the farmers are paid a fair price, it encourages those who are the best stewards the land to stay and care for it, and it preserves the songbird habitat for future generations.

Make a world of difference... Buy shade-grown, organic, fair-trade coffee.
